HOW TO LIVE LIKE A PILGRIM
LIFE BEYOND THE CAMINO
The Camino teaches you many valuable lessons if you’re willing to learn them, and in practical terms it has a lot to say about how to live well with modest means. For most people, walking the Camino is a luxury. Not many people have either the time or the resources to spend a couple of weeks walking across the Iberian peninsula, yet those who undertake the journey consider the experience to be among the most rewarding and memorable of their lives. One of the primary reasons for that is the simplicity of the pilgrim’s lifestyle, which essentially consists of walking, eating and sleeping. This Spartan existence provides ample opportunities to assess your priorities in life. When you have survived for over a month with just the bare essentials, you begin to ask yourself if you really need all the creature comforts we’re expected to have.
We spend a lot of our lives working hard to buy things that we often do not need, and we discard them as quickly as we buy them. By cultivating a pilgrim’s mindset, whereby you only buy what you need, you live within your means, and you eliminate waste, you can attain a much greater degree of financial peace of mind. Similarly, maintaining the disciplined lifestyle of a pilgrim by sleeping regular hours, exercising frequently, and eating nutritious, healthy meals your fitness levels and overall physical and mental well being will improve.
